Der Gebäudekomplex, auch bekannt als „Rotes Schloss am Meer“ oder „Rote Burg an der Förde“, wurde zwischen 1907 und 1910 erbaut und dient mit kurzen Unterbrechungen kontinuierlich als Ausbildungsstätte. Architektonisches Vorbild war die Ordensburg Marienburg, auf Wunsch von Kaiser Wilhelm II.
